“No parent is ALWAYS conscious, gentle, positive and authentic. We have to CHOOSE to be and practice moment by moment… day after day. The more we practice, the stronger we grow.”
– Leila Schott, Petit Book Corner
As we worked with children with a variety of special needs over the years, it was natural that our therapists would also strive to help parents and caregivers in the therapeutic process as well. Sometimes a families’ needs in the area of managing their child’s developmental, social-emotional, cognitive and behavioral growth in the face of many challenges can be daunting. That’s when we turn to our Counseling Team to help support parents and caregivers in these areas of need.
What Are Some Reasons Parents and Caregivers May Need Some Support?
Many situations in a family’s life can present challenges to the parents and caregivers that may need some specialized problem solving with our counselors. Some of these reasons and situations include the following:
What Can We Expect From Counseling?
Every approach to therapy is individualized using various methods based on you and your family’s needs and comfort level. In general counseling sessions are 45-60 minutes long. Depending on the needs of the family, some separate time for children and/or each parent/caregiver with therapists may be recommended. Time spent working with the parent/caregiver team and family as a whole will also be important. The type of therapeutic methods used and length of services are dependent on varying issues, such as what problems are being addressed and how willing and able participants are to reach desired goals. This can also be influenced by the strength of family’s support systems, and the level of needs to be met. Sometimes sessions are set on a weekly basis, taking learning step by step and at a steady pace. Other times sessions can be more or less frequent based on the individual or couple’s needs at the time.
